How does the Federal Skilled Trades Program(FSTP) work?

The Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) is a Canadian immigration program that allows skilled tradespeople to apply for permanent residence. The program is designed to help address labour shortages in certain skilled trades occupations.

To be eligible for the FSTP, candidates must have at least two years of full-time work experience in a qualifying skilled trade occupation. They must also meet the minimum language requirements, have a valid job offer from a Canadian employer, and pass a skills assessment.

Once an applicant has met all the eligibility requirements, they can submit an online application through the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website. After the application has been submitted, IRCC will review it to make sure that all the required information has been provided. If everything is in order, the applicant will be invited to submit their supporting documentation, such as their educational credentials and work experience records.

The next step in the process is an interview with a immigration officer. During the interview, the officer will ask questions about the applicant’s work experience and skills. They will also assess whether the applicant is likely to succeed in their chosen trade occupation in Canada.

If the applicant is approved for permanent residence, they will receive a Confirmation of Permanent Residence document. This document must be presented to border officials when the applicant arrives in Canada. The applicant will then be granted permanent residence and will be able to work in their chosen skilled trade occupation in Canada.

How to get a certificate of qualification for federal skilled trades program?

If you have a trade certificate from a Canadian province or territory, you may be eligible to apply for the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP). To apply for the FSTP, you must first obtain a certificate of qualification from the Canadian province or territory where your trade is regulated.

There are two ways to get a certificate of qualification:

1. Apply directly to the regulatory authority in the province or territory where your trade is regulated; or
2. Complete an apprenticeship in your trade in Canada.

If you choose to apply directly to the regulatory authority, you will need to submit an application along with any required documentation, such as transcripts and proof of work experience. The regulatory authority will then assess your application and determine whether you are eligible to receive a certificate of qualification.

If you choose to complete an apprenticeship in your trade, you will need to register with an apprenticeship program in Canada. Once you have completed your apprenticeship, you will automatically receive a certificate of qualification from the relevant provincial or territorial government.

There are a few different ways to do this, but one of the most common is to show that you have access to at least $12,475 CAD. This can be in the form of cash, investments, or even a loan from a financial institution.

If you're unable to meet this requirement on your own, you may be able to have someone else sponsor you. However, they'll need to meet certain criteria and sign a formal agreement with the government.

Job offers usually require a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) however there are exceptions. LMIAs are used by the federal government to verify that the hiring of foreign nationals does not have a negative impact on the Canadian job market.
