If you're an international job seeker looking to work in Canada, you'll need a work permit. And to get a work permit, you'll need a job offer from a Canadian employer who is willing to sponsor your visa. But how do you find these visa sponsorship jobs from abroad?

Finding an employer who will support an LMIA application can be a challenging task, especially without the assistance of an immigration consultant. However, there are some steps that you can take to increase your chances of finding an employer who will support your LMIA application without relying on a consultant.

Here are some tips:

1. Conduct thorough research

Research is key to finding an employer who will support your LMIA application. Use online job boards, such as Indeed or LinkedIn, to identify companies that are hiring in your field of expertise. Check their websites for job postings and read about their business operations and corporate culture.

2. Network

Networking is another effective way to find an employer who may be willing to support your LMIA application. Attend industry events, conferences, and job fairs to meet with potential employers and make connections. Reach out to people in your field who are already working in Canada and ask for their advice and recommendations.

3. Target industries with labor shortages

Certain industries in Canada are experiencing labor shortages and are actively seeking foreign workers. Check the government of Canada's website for a list of occupations that are currently in high demand. Consider targeting companies in these industries and highlight how your skills and experience can help fill their labor gap.

4. Apply for jobs that explicitly state LMIA support

When applying for jobs, look for postings that explicitly state that the employer is willing to support an LMIA application. Some employers may also mention this in their job descriptions or on their websites. Focus your job search on these opportunities and tailor your resume and cover letter to highlight your qualifications and how you can benefit the employer.

5. Be patient and persistent

Finding an employer who will support an LMIA application can take time and persistence. Keep applying to jobs, follow up with employers, and be patient. If an employer is interested in hiring you, be prepared to provide them with information about the LMIA process and how it works.

Steps to find a job with an employer who will support visa sponsorship and LMIA

Here's a walk through on the step-by-step process of finding visa sponsorship jobs in Canada from abroad using the website www.jobbank.gc.ca.

Step 1: Visit www.jobbank.gc.ca

The first step is to visit the website www.jobbank.gc.ca, which is the official job board of the Government of Canada. This website is a great resource for finding job opportunities in the Canadian federal government and other organizations that operate in Canada.

Step 2: Create an Account

To apply for jobs on www.jobbank.gc.ca, you'll need to create an account. Click on the "Sign In" button in the top right corner of the website and then click "Create an account." Follow the instructions to create your account. It is not mandatory to create an account.

Step 3: Search for Jobs

Once or if you've created your account, you can start searching for jobs. Click on the "Job Search" button in the top left corner of the website and then enter your search criteria. You can search for jobs by keyword, job title, location, salary range, and more.

Understand whether you can apply for this job as a foreign national who does not have an LMIA or authorization to work or not

If you are still unsure, please use the advanced search feature as described in Step 4.

Step 4: Refine Your Search

After you've entered your search criteria, you may need to refine your search to find visa sponsorship jobs. To do this, click on the "Advanced Search" button and then select ''Canadians and international candidates'' option. This will show you jobs that have the potential to lead to permanent residency and sponsorship.

Step 5: Apply for Jobs

Once you've found jobs that interest you, click on the job title to read the full job description. If you're interested in the job, click on the "Apply" button to start the application process. Follow the instructions to complete your application.

Step 6: Follow Up on Your Applications

After you've applied for jobs, it's important to follow up on your applications. Check your email regularly for updates on your application status. If you haven't heard back within a few weeks, consider following up with the employer.

What is an LMIA exempt work permit under C-32?

An LMIA exempt work permit under C-32 refers to a type of work permit that does not require a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) as part of the application process. LMIA is a document that Canadian employers may need to obtain before hiring foreign workers, which assesses whether there are any Canadian citizens or permanent residents available to fill the job position.

Under the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) regulations, certain types of work permits are exempt from the LMIA requirement, and one such exemption is available under the C-32 regulation.

C-32 refers to a section of the Canadian immigration law that allows foreign workers to obtain an LMIA exempt work permit under specific circumstances. For example, if the foreign worker is covered under an international agreement, such as the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) or the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), they may be eligible for an LMIA exempt work permit under C-32.

Other examples of LMIA exempt work permits under C-32 include work permits issued to individuals who are working in Canada on a short-term basis, such as business visitors or foreign representatives, or individuals who are participating in a research or educational program.

In summary, an LMIA exempt work permit under C-32 is a type of work permit that is available to foreign workers who meet specific eligibility requirements, such as being covered under an international agreement or participating in a specific program or activity, and is not subject to the usual LMIA requirement.

How to find employers who have already received a Positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) for the position they are hirinig

To check if your employer has already received a positive LMIA, click here.

An employer must obtain a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) before hiring a Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) for a specific occupation. It's important to note that the list of employers who requested or received an LMIA is not complete, as it excludes personal names and business names that include personal names.

The data in this report only tracks TFW positions on LMIA applications and not TFWs who have already entered Canada or been issued a work permit. The decision to issue a work permit is made by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), which means that not all approved positions will result in a TFW entering Canada. Additionally, the data includes all positions on all positive LMIAs, including those that were later cancelled by the employer.

Jobs exempt from needing an LMIA

There are only two reasons the employer making you the offer doesn’t need to get a new LMIA:

  • if you’re already working for them with a work permit based on that LMIA

  • if you work in a job that doesn’t need an LMIA

Your employer must get a new LMIA if:

  • your work permit has expired

  • you’re working on an open work permit

  • you have a job offer from an employer not listed on your work permit
